Ed Sheeran- Terminal 5 9.21.12

Last night I went to the Ed Sheeran concert at Terminal 5 in New York City. I have been an Ed fan for close to a year, and it was absolutely amazing to see him live. For those of you who don’t know, Ed Sheeran is a British singer/songwriter from Suffolk. He has been writing and singing songs for years and years and now he is known around the world. There really is no way for me to describe Ed’s voice. It’s just amazing. He can sing everything and anything, from love songs, to songs about druggies and alcoholics, to crazy raps.Image

At the concert, it was just Ed, his guitar, and a loop pedal. He recorded his own harmonies and bass beats to play during his song right in front of us. It was amazing how he did it all and seemed so comfortable doing all of it.

What was most surprising to me at this concert was that he had great control over the crowd. For some of his deep love songs he said, “Now for this song, you all need to be quiet, don’t sing along, just listen” and everyone, except a few of the random drunkards, was silent.  It was an amazing environment to be in. He also was very interactive. He deemed us his “gospel choir”. He would give us harmonies to sing while he sang his songs, he would ask us to sing the chorus while he would harmonize on top of us, and so on and so forth. He also had a little West Side Story crowd-competition sort of thing during this encore. He split the Terminal in half: one side was the Sharks, and the other the Jets. He told the Jets to sing the chorus of “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” and the Sharks the chorus of “My Eyes Are Red”. We both battled it out and it was so much fun and it sounded awesome.

For his song “This” he asked us to turn to the person next to us and give them a huge hug. It didn’t matter if we knew them or if they were complete strangers, just give them a hug. Then he said wrap your arms around each other and just sway, and sing along. Everyone in the Terminal was swaying and singing and it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.

Before he sang his song “Kiss Me” he explained the meaning behind it. He has two godparents who got married to separate people and both went through bad divorces. Throughout that process, they became best friends and fell in love. He proposed to her on a train ride, and, of course, she said yes. When they told Ed that they were getting married, they asked him to sing one of his love songs at their wedding. When he realized that none of his songs were perfect for the occasion, he decided to write one. “Kiss Me” is about two best friends falling in love. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it and I got really emotional when I heard the story behind it.

Ed also did a trio with his two opening acts (Passenger and Selah Sue). They sang one of Passenger’s songs “My Heart’s On Fire”. It was absolutely beautiful and their voices meshed together so well. Watch it here.

So, as you may see, I love Ed Sheeran. I highly suggest you go listen to his songs. Look him up on iTunes, YouTube, his website, his twitter, anything. His album “+” is available on iTunes, and so is his EP “The A Team – EP”. Check him out! He is going on tour around the US right now and is hoping to tour around the world soon.
