Ac(TEE)vism- Reformation Action Tees

This is the first post in a new series called AC(TEE)VISM – get it? Like activism but with tee-shirts? There are so many incredible brands supporting other organizations through selling capsule collections of tee-shirts (and more), and they deserve to be recognized!

As if I haven’t ranted and raved about them enough, Reformation is really upping their game. Reformation has nailed the jumpsuit, makes the softest sustainable tees I know, and now has released a line of “Action Tees”. When I first saw the tees, I immediately fell in love. The on-trend colors (like sunflower yellow!) and catchy, tastefully politically charged slogans caught my eye right off the bat. The $50 price tag, though, gave me a bit of a Macklemore & Ryan Lewis “Thrift Shop” moment – “I’m like, Yo that’s fifty dollars for a Tee-shirt”. The thing is, though, Reformation donates $30 for each shirt sold to three different incredible and important organizations.

Reformation donates $30 to Planned Parenthood for every “I’m Just Getting Started” shirt that is sold. Planned Parenthood has been a political battleground throughout this entire election season. Regardless of what is said about the organization on a political level, Planned Parenthood provides invaluable resources to both men and women. Their mission is: “Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual’s income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. We believe that respect and value for diversity in all aspects of our organization are essential to our well-being. We believe that reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individual’s right to privacy. We further believe that such self-determination will contribute to an enhancement of the quality of life and strong family relationships.” Planned Parenthood provides STI and STD testing for men and women, access to birth control, resources for the LGBTQ community, as well as many other general women’s health resources. This “My Meow My Choice” tee supports, you guessed it, Planned Parenthood.

This “More Trees Less Walls” tee donates $30 per shirt to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The goal of the ACLU is to “defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States.” Some of the ACLU’s accomplishments include winning the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court Case which established marriage equality as an American right, blocking over 300 laws aimed at restricting reproductive rights, and successfully overturning Voter ID laws. Their website is chock full of information about your rights as an individual and the rights of all of those in the United States; read more HERE.

This fun “Meryl” tee supports the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). The EDF is “one of the world’s largest environmental organizations, with more than two million members and a staff of 550 scientists, economists, policy experts, and other professionals around the world“. The EDF “achieves results by finding solutions that benefit people while protecting natural systems“. The EDF has partnered with organizations like McDonalds to reduce waste, worked with policymakers to create and pass climate change legislation, and has protected an array of animal species since the organization started 50 years ago in 1967. Learn more about the EDF by visiting their website HERE.

The “Save Winter” tee also supports EDF.

As someone who is not necessarily willing to donate $30 of my own money to an organization like Planned Parenthood, ACLU or EDF, it is great to see that these kind of activist tee-shirts are becoming popular among many different fashion brands. I will probably buy one of these shirts tomorrow, knowing the I’ll not only get a cute tee-shirt with a catchy slogan, but I’ll also get the satisfaction of knowing that my purchase is supporting something greater than myself. Fashion can make a difference, and this is a prime example of that!!! Stay tuned for more AC(TEE)VISM posts and more sustainable fashion goodness – there’s lots more to come!
